A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the responsibility of The University of Texas Medical
Branch at Galveston to provide health care services to certain
residents.
       BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
       SECTION 1.  The heading to Section 74.005, Education Code,
is amended to read as follows:
       Sec. 74.005.  TREATMENT OF CERTAIN PATIENTS; MEDICAL BRANCH
AS HOSPITAL OF LAST RESORT.
       SECTION 2.  Section 74.005, Education Code, is amended by
adding Subsection (d-1) to read as follows:
       (d-1)  Subject to this section and Chapter 61, Health and
Safety Code, the medical branch that treats an eligible resident of
a county, public hospital, or hospital district is entitled to
reimbursement of the medical branch's actual costs of providing
health care services to the eligible resident from the appropriate
county, public hospital, or hospital district.
       SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
Act takes effect September 1, 2007.
