A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the time for affiliation with a political party. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Chapter 162, Election Code, is amended by adding |
|
Section 162.0095 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 162.0095. AFFILIATION PROCEDURE: PRESIDENTIAL |
|
PRIMARY ELECTION. (a) This section applies only to a person |
|
desiring to affiliate with a political party between: |
|
(1) the first day on which an application for a place |
|
on the election ballot for the general primary election held in the |
|
same year in which the presidential primary election is held may be |
|
filed; and |
|
(2) the date of the presidential primary election. |
|
(b) A person may affiliate with a political party by |
|
registering with the party as provided by party rule. The rules |
|
must allow a person to submit the registration electronically, by |
|
mail, or in person at locations provided by the rules. |
|
(c) The form of the registration must include: |
|
(1) a space for the person's name, address, county of |
|
registration, and voter registration number; and |
|
(2) the following statement to be signed by the voter: |
|
"I swear that I have not voted in a primary election or participated |
|
in the convention of another party during the voting year." |
|
(d) The form of the registration may include a space for: |
|
(1) the person's e-mail address or phone number; and |
|
(2) an affirmation of support for a candidate listed |
|
on the ballot in the presidential primary election. |
|
(e) Notwithstanding Section 162.010, an affiliation made |
|
under this section is effective from the date of the registration |
|
until the end of the voting year in which the presidential primary |
|
election is held. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2007. |
