HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, Proud residents of Mount Pleasant and Titus County
  are visiting Austin to celebrate Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day at
  the State Capitol on March 13, 2007; and
         WHEREAS, A picturesque region of East Texas woodlands, Titus
  County was first inhabited several thousand years ago by the Caddo
  tribe, and Creeks, Choctaws, and Cherokees came into the area in the
  early 1800s; European settlers began arriving in the 1840s; and
         WHEREAS, Titus County was established in 1846 by the first
  Texas state legislature, with Mount Pleasant as the county seat;
  the county was named after Andrew Jackson Titus, who opened the
  first road to the river port in nearby Jefferson; and
         WHEREAS, The county's economy was mainly agriculture,
  depending on cotton and corn, as well as cattle, hogs, and sheep;
  the Talco oilfield was discovered in 1936, and today Titus County
  enjoys a diverse economy based on agribusiness, industry, tourism,
  and timber; and
         WHEREAS, The county seat of Mount Pleasant is a thriving
  community that has been designated a Texas Main Street City and
  named one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America; it is a center for
  poultry processing, medical services, lignite coal mining, and the
  manufacture of farm equipment and trailers and is home as well to
  Northeast Texas Community College; and
         WHEREAS, Mount Pleasant is rich with opportunities for
  fishing, boating, and swimming, as well as hiking and picnicking,
  at such scenic spots as Lake Bob Sandlin, Lake Monticello, and Lake
  Welsh; it also offers a multitude of sites for bird-watchers and
  garden enthusiasts; and
         WHEREAS, Building on their history of accomplishments,
  abundant natural resources, and convenient location that offers the
  simpler lifestyle of small towns but provides easy accessibility to
  metropolitan areas, Titus County citizens are contributing
  immeasurably to the vibrancy of the Lone Star State; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby designate March 13, 2007, as Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day
  at the State Capitol and offer best wishes to the visiting
  delegation for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
