HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, Kathryn Bailey Allen, a longtime resident of Tyler, |
|
is celebrating her 90th birthday on March 4, 2007, and this |
|
significant milestone offers a welcome opportunity to recognize |
|
this esteemed Texan; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born to Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Bailey on March 4, 1917, |
|
in Chisholm, the former Kathryn Bailey moved with her family to |
|
Tyler in 1930, where her father entered into private medical |
|
practice and cofounded Mother Frances Hospital; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following her graduation from Tyler High School in |
|
1934, Mrs. Allen studied elementary education at The University of |
|
Texas and earned her bachelor's degree in 1938; and |
|
WHEREAS, She married George Bolten Allen on August 10 of the |
|
following year, and the devoted couple enjoyed 54 years together, |
|
until his passing in 1993; a schoolteacher and a clinical |
|
assistant, Mrs. Allen supported her husband, who had been an Army |
|
Air Corps medic, as he completed medical school and his internship |
|
and residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans; returning to |
|
Tyler in 1947, Dr. Allen entered into private practice and Mrs. |
|
Allen continued to serve others by joining the Smith County Medical |
|
Society Auxiliary, now known as the Smith County Medical Alliance; |
|
still active in the organization today, she was instrumental in |
|
founding its book fair, which has raised nearly $500,000 for |
|
nursing scholarships, and her impassioned advocacy for the program |
|
earned her the first ever Golden Heart award in recognition of her |
|
outstanding community service; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Allen has volunteered with numerous other |
|
worthy organizations, including the Salvation Army, People |
|
Attempting to Help, Goodwill Industries, Meals on Wheels, the |
|
Junior League of Tyler, and United Methodist Women; she is a valued |
|
congregant of Marvin United Methodist Church, where she has |
|
worshipped for more than 75 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Allen is a source of great wisdom and joy to her |
|
family, which today includes two children, four grandchildren, and |
|
two great-grandchildren, and her ongoing support and service to |
|
those in need continues to inspire all who are fortunate enough to |
|
know her; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby congratulate Kathryn Bailey Allen on the joyous occasion of |
|
her 90th birthday and extend to her warmest best wishes for |
|
continued happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mrs. Allen as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives and Senate. |
