CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Barnie McBee Memorial Cook-off in Comanche is |
|
recognized as a prominent barbecue competition that draws dozens of |
|
cooking teams and as many as 10,000 spectators each year; and |
|
WHEREAS, Held in conjunction with the Comanche County |
|
Pow-Wow, the event was founded in 1982 through the efforts of avid |
|
barbecuer Barnie McBee and other volunteers; Mr. McBee served as |
|
the chair of the competition for many years, and after his passing |
|
it was renamed the Barnie McBee Memorial Cook-off in 1990; and |
|
WHEREAS, The event has grown into an extremely popular |
|
gathering; enthusiastic cooks converge on Comanche's City Park each |
|
September with their smokers and cookers in tow, and huge crowds |
|
gather to enjoy the food, the festivities, and the drama of culinary |
|
competition; many of the participants settle in for several days of |
|
camping and cooking in the park, which enjoys a scenic and shady |
|
location alongside South Fork Creek; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since 1996, the Barnie McBee Memorial Cook-off has |
|
been sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society, which oversees |
|
contests all over the state to ensure that they are fair and well |
|
run; the Comanche cook-off has expanded beyond its original |
|
beef-brisket judging and now also crowns winners in chicken and |
|
pork spare ribs categories, with contestants vying for cash prizes |
|
and trophies; and |
|
WHEREAS, For more than a quarter-century, the Barnie McBee |
|
Memorial Cook-off has made a significant contribution to the Lone |
|
Star State's renowned barbecue culture, and it is indeed fitting |
|
that this much-loved annual tradition be accorded special |
|
recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby designate the Barnie McBee Memorial Cook-off as the official |
|
North Central Texas Regional Championship Barbecue Cook-off. |
