CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, Nine-year-old Katie Chaix has received the Life
  Saver Award from her school, Cecil Everett Elementary School of
  Paris, for saving the life of her younger sister with the Heimlich
  maneuver; and
         WHEREAS, The Chaix family was at dinner one evening when
  Katie's five-year-old sister, Chloe, stopped eating, clutched her
  throat, and began to turn blue; and
         WHEREAS, Only two days before, in a physical education class
  taught by North Lamar Independent School District nurse Carla
  Spann, Miss Chaix had learned that grabbing one's throat is the
  universal sign for choking; she also learned, in that same class,
  how to dislodge food by using the Heimlich maneuver; and
         WHEREAS, The quick-thinking Miss Chaix immediately
  recognized that her little sister was choking and sprang to her aid;
  remembering what she had learned in nurse Spann's presentation, she
  got young Chloe out of her chair and performed the Heimlich
  maneuver, clearing her airway and saving her life; and
         WHEREAS, The girls' mother, Shellie Chaix, contacted the
  school to express her gratitude for her daughter's lesson in the
  lifesaving technique, and during a recent assembly, Katie Chaix was
  honored by her school with the Life Saver Award; and
         WHEREAS, By paying close attention in class and using what
  she had learned skillfully and without hesitation, Katie Chaix
  rescued a loved one and averted what could have been a terrible
  tragedy; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby commend Katie Chaix for saving the life of her sister and
  congratulate her on her receipt of a Life Saver Award from Cecil
  Everett Elementary School; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Miss Chaix as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives and Senate.
