CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times, loving |
|
moments, and meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and |
|
friends of William David Slaughter, Jr., who passed away on |
|
December 28, 2006, at the age of 48; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born to David and Barbara Slaughter, in Las Cruces, |
|
New Mexico, William David Slaughter, Jr., known to many as "Dub," |
|
became a resident of Texas when his family moved to Culberson County |
|
during the first year of his life; he began school in Van Horn but |
|
later moved to Iraan and graduated from high school there in 1976; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Dub Slaughter was very involved in athletics, 4H, |
|
and FFA activities, once serving as the Lone Star Farmer |
|
representing Texas at the national FFA convention; he went on to |
|
attend Angelo State University in 1976 and later transferred to |
|
Texas Christian University, where he completed the ranch management |
|
program and then attained his bachelor's degree in finance and |
|
management in 1981; and |
|
WHEREAS, Establishing himself in the business of ranching, |
|
Mr. Slaughter became an active and well-respected member of the |
|
community; this was evident in his participation in a variety of |
|
important civic organizations, including the Pecos County |
|
Appraisal District, the Pecos County Hospital District, the Pecos |
|
County Water District, and the Iraan-Sheffield Independent School |
|
District Board of Trustees; in the latter role, he was instrumental |
|
in the district's conversion of the Sheffield elementary building |
|
into a Texas Youth Commission facility; Dub Slaughter was also a |
|
member of the Pecos County Livestock Association, the Ozona Wool |
|
and Mohair Association, the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers |
|
Association, and the American Boer Goat Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, Well known for his ever-present smile as well as his |
|
love of good conversation and good friends, Dub Slaughter was at |
|
ease with people from all walks of life; he will be fondly |
|
remembered as an accomplished rancher, an influential community |
|
advocate, and a devoted family man who will be greatly missed by all |
|
who had the good fortune to have known him; and |
|
WHEREAS, In light of Mr. Slaughter's many contributions to |
|
the state, Pecos County, and the town of Sheffield, it would be most |
|
fitting to memorialize this outstanding civic leader by naming the |
|
TYC facility in Sheffield in his honor; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby encourage the board of the Texas Youth Commission, or its |
|
successor entity, to name the TYC facility in Sheffield, Texas, |
|
after William David Slaughter, Jr.; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official |
|
copy of this resolution to the board of the Texas Youth Commission |
|
or its successor entity. |
