H.C.R. No. 238
 
 
 
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, A team of four seniors from Paris High School, Aivee
  Tabangcora, Stephanie Smothermon, Jamie DiBello, and Stephanie
  Clifford, took first place at the 2007 Texas Future Problem Solving
  Bowl; and
         WHEREAS, The Future Problem Solving Program International is
  a student program that encourages creativity and critical thinking
  through competitions in which students propose solutions to various
  social problems; using only a dictionary, a thesaurus, and pencils
  and paper, competing students have two hours to brainstorm a future
  scenario and propose solutions; more than 250,000 students from the
  United States, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, New
  Zealand, and Russia compete in the program every year; and
         WHEREAS, Topics for each competition are researched in
  advance, and the winning team from Paris prepared for this year's
  state bowl by researching the societal challenge of caring for the
  elderly; high school teams are coached by PHS English teacher
  Sandra Strom and Dr. Janet Dickey; and
         WHEREAS, The Future Problem Solving program has been offered
  as an extracurricular activity at Paris High School for 20 years;
  their victory at the state event qualifies the Paris team to compete
  at the international competition in Fort Collins, Colorado, in
  June; the 2007 win represents the seventh time in the past 12 years
  that a Paris team has advanced to the international competition;
  and
         WHEREAS, These bright and committed young people represent
  the best of the Lone Star State, and their first place win is a
  fitting reward for the energy, engagement, and teamwork they
  demonstrated in addressing some of the most important and complex
  issues of the day; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby congratulate Aivee Tabangcora, Stephanie Smothermon, Jamie
  DiBello, and Stephanie Clifford of Paris High School for taking
  first place at the Texas Future Problem Solving Bowl and extend to
  them best wishes for continued achievement; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the students as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
