R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Mario Rivera retired from his position as Presidio |
|
County treasurer in December 2006, and it is fitting to pay tribute |
|
to the legacy of service he established in more than 32 years as an |
|
elected official; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Marfa in 1943, Mario Rivera was one of 11 |
|
children of Rito P. and Maria S. Rivera; a graduate of Marfa High |
|
School, where he was a member of the baseball, basketball, and track |
|
teams, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964 and served his country |
|
for three years; returning to West Texas after his discharge, he |
|
earned a business administration degree from Sul Ross State |
|
University in 1971; and |
|
WHEREAS, His tenure as county treasurer began when he was |
|
appointed to the office in March 1974, and Presidio County |
|
residents voted to retain him in that job later the same year; over |
|
the following decades, this skilled administrator was a beneficial |
|
and reassuring presence in the Marfa courthouse, serving eight |
|
consecutive terms as the chief custodian of the county's finances; |
|
Mr. Rivera's experience and knowledge were highly respected by his |
|
peers, who made him a member of the regional board of directors and |
|
the state board of directors for the County Treasurers' Association |
|
of Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, An involved member of the community throughout his |
|
life, Mr. Rivera has been active in various civic organizations, |
|
including the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the American Legion |
|
and has served as an adult mentor for youth baseball activities; and |
|
WHEREAS, Supported by his wife, Alice Hernandez Rivera, and |
|
his children, Rene and Rosela, Mario Rivera provided many decades |
|
of valuable service to West Texas residents, and his contributions |
|
to efficient and effective government in Presidio County are truly |
|
deserving of recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Mario Rivera for his long and accomplished |
|
career as the Presidio County treasurer and extend to him best |
|
wishes for success in his future endeavors; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Rivera as an expression of high regard from the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
