R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The loss of esteemed family matriarch Phyllis Carter
  Pou Pierce on December 6, 2006, at the age of 89, left a void in the
  lives of her large and loving family, yet her passing offers a
  fitting opportunity to remember this fine woman and her legacy of
  achievement; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Illinois on July 27, 1917, Mrs. Pierce came
  to Texas in 1937 and proudly resided in the Lone Star State for
  nearly 70 years; for the past two decades, this doting
  great-grandmother spent half of each year in her adopted hometown
  of Dallas and the other six months in the Shenandoah Valley of
  Virginia at Bryce Mountain, near the West Virginia border; and
         WHEREAS, One of nine children, Mrs. Pierce is survived by
  five siblings, Milburn Carter, Fae Bess, Joanne Shively, Jim
  Carter, and Mary Lou Harshman; she was preceded in death by her
  first husband, Major General (Ret.) Robert L. Pou, Jr., with whom
  she shared many happy years and raised two children; after being
  widowed, she was lucky to find love a second time, marrying Paul
  Herbert Pierce, who would also precede her in death; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Pierce was active through her longtime
  affiliation with Highland Park United Methodist Church; in addition
  to taking part in weekly services and other fellowship activities,
  this devout and dedicated Christian found grace and strength of
  character as a member of the 2x2 Sunday School class and Circle 5,
  enriching her life through study and discussion with her peers; and
         WHEREAS, Blessed with a loyal group of friends, Mrs. Pierce
  found immense pleasure in her regular bridge games, both with her
  Saturday night group and with her fellow card enthusiasts at
  Lakewood Baptist Church; she also delighted in her participation in
  the Mary K. Craig class, the Southern Methodist University Staff
  Retirees Association, and her book club; and
         WHEREAS, Phyllis Carter Pou Pierce enjoyed a long and happy
  life that touched the lives of family, friends, and countless
  others in inestimable ways, and although she has left this world for
  the next, her indomitable spirit will endure in the hearts of those
  who were fortunate to have known this warm and wonderful woman; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and memory of Phyllis
  Carter Pou Pierce and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her
  family: to her daughter, Diane Pou Wilcox, and her husband, Don; to
  her son, Robert L. Pou III, and his wife, Cindy; to her
  grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Robert L. "Robin" Pou IV,
  and his wife, Karen, and their children, Robert L. Pou V and Cate
  Pou; Dana Erin Wilcox; Deren Pou Wilcox, and his wife, Laura, and
  their daughter, Natalie Wilcox; and Lathram Carter Pou, and his
  wife, Carmen, and their son, Luke Pou; to the family of Herb Pierce,
  whom she cherished dearly; to her siblings, Milburn Carter, Fae
  Bess, Joanne Shively, Jim Carter, and Mary Lou Harshman; and to the
  other relatives and many friends of this beloved and admired woman;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Phyllis
  Carter Pou Pierce.
