H.R. No. 84

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is
hosting its 78th annual installation banquet on January 25, 2007,
and this occasion provides a welcome opportunity to honor the
  chamber's myriad achievements; and
WHEREAS, Chartered in 1929 as the Mexican Chamber of
Commerce, the chamber was organized by Don Enrique Santibanez,
consul general of Mexico in San Antonio, with the mission of
  promoting trade, policy, and cultural harmony with his home state;
from the beginning, chamber leaders worked hard to identify local
Hispanic businesses and to address the ability of these businesses
to prosper; in 1949, the group was instrumental in getting city
approval for the Buena Vista Street overpass, significantly
increasing the mobility of area residents who could be blocked in by
  train traffic; and
WHEREAS, Decades later, the SAHCC continued to promote
economic prosperity, and it played a central role in the
  development and passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement;
in the years that followed, the chamber led the efforts to educate
Mexican Americans around the country on the trade agreement, and it
serves as a key resource for those seeking new trade opportunities
  as a result; and
WHEREAS, This stalwart organization has continued to adapt to
the needs of its members, broadening its role to include advocacy of
small businesses, as well as those owned by minorities and women,
and in 1999, it successfully worked for legislation that
strengthened the state's Historically Underutilized Business
  program; and
WHEREAS, For nearly eight decades, the San Antonio Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce has rendered invaluable assistance to countless
  individuals, advanced cross-cultural understanding, and
contributed immeasurably to a robust business environment in the
  state; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce on the occasion of its 78th installation banquet and
extend to its many members sincere best wishes for continued
  success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as an
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
