R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to |
|
|
honor the citizens of Laredo and to recognize January 24, 2007, as |
|
|
Laredo Legislative Day at the Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1755 by Don Tomas Sanchez, Laredo was |
|
|
forged in the heat of battles among Spaniards, Indians, Mexicans, |
|
|
Texans, and Americans; today the City Under Seven Flags exists as |
|
|
one of the world's unique and most interesting cultural |
|
|
intersections, a true crossroads between nations; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Situated on the north bank of the Rio Grande, Laredo |
|
|
is the largest inland port on the southern United States border; it |
|
|
is one of the top four ports-of-commerce in the nation, and is a |
|
|
major gateway for overland trade between the United States and |
|
|
Mexico; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A commitment to education is a vital component of |
|
|
Laredo's success; Texas A&M International University in North |
|
|
Laredo and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San |
|
|
Antonio Laredo Extension Campus teem with students, while Laredo |
|
|
Community College has expanded to include a second campus; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Laredo's citizens proudly support the Laredo Bucks, |
|
|
the 2004 and 2006 Central Hockey League President's Cup Champions, |
|
|
as well as several minor league sports teams; the city also plays an |
|
|
important role in the global war on terror, as home to the Laredo |
|
|
International Fire and Law Enforcement Training Center; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Whether as a gateway for international trade and |
|
|
tourism or as a regional center for education and entertainment, |
|
|
the city of Laredo continues to grow and prosper thanks to the |
|
|
dedication of its devoted leaders and hard-working citizens; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize January 24, 2007, as Laredo |
|
|
Legislative Day at the Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the |
|
|
residents of Laredo who have traveled to Austin to celebrate this |
|
|
occasion. |
