R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Residents of the State of Texas are joining citizens |
|
around the world in celebration of the 15-day Chinese New Year |
|
season, which begins on February 18, 2007; and |
|
WHEREAS, Also known as the Spring Festival or the Lunar New |
|
Year, the Chinese New Year traditionally recognizes the renewal of |
|
the earth for plowing and sowing, but it is also a time for |
|
celebration and reflection with friends and family; and |
|
WHEREAS, The second new moon after the winter solstice |
|
determines the first day of the Chinese New Year, and the Lantern |
|
Festival, occurring a fortnight later, signals the end of the |
|
holiday; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Chinese Lunar Calendar represents a cyclical, |
|
rather than the Western linear, concept of time as it is based on |
|
the cycles of the moon; a popular folk method that reflects this |
|
system of recording years is the rotating cycle of 12 animal signs; |
|
each year is assigned an animal symbol, and February 18, 2007, |
|
ushers in the year of the pig; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Chinese community plays a vital role in the |
|
business, professional, and cultural life of the Lone Star State, |
|
and the Chinese New Year is a fitting time to reflect on the |
|
positive contributions of Chinese Americans in Texas and to look |
|
forward to another year of continued prosperity and good fortune; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize the Chinese New Year on February 18, |
|
2007, and extend to the Chinese American communities of Texas best |
|
wishes for a healthy and happy New Year. |
