R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Citizens from Nacogdoches County, members of the
  Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, and the Leadership
  Nacogdoches Class of 2007 are assembling at the State Capitol to
  celebrate Nacogdoches County Days on February 21 and 22, 2007; and
         WHEREAS, Originally inhabited by the mound-building Caddoan
  people, this fertile and forested region was visited by Spanish
  explorers in the 1500s; in 1716, the first nonnative settlements
  were founded, including Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de los
  Nacogdoches, which was named for the local Native Americans and
  located on the site that is now the city of Nacogdoches; and
         WHEREAS, Nacogdoches County has a long tradition of "firsts";
  in 1813, Gaceta de Tejas was the first newspaper to be written in
  Texas; Benjamin Edwards and 30 followers were the first to declare
  the independence of Texas during the Fredonian Rebellion of 1826;
  the Battle of Nacogdoches on August 2, 1832, is often considered the
  opening salvo of the Texas Revolution; and the county was the site
  of the first producing oil well in Texas, which was drilled in 1866;
  and
         WHEREAS, The heartland of the Piney Woods of East Texas,
  Nacogdoches County is home to a thriving lumber industry as well as
  being an important center for ranching and poultry farming; the
  county's economy is further driven by a variety of innovative
  companies, including Pilgrim's Pride, a provider of farm products,  
  and Effective Teleservice, Inc., a telecommunications company; and
         WHEREAS, The residents of the county and the state are well
  served by a fine institution of higher learning, Stephen F. Austin
  State University, with 11,000 students attending its picturesque
  campus in Nacogdoches and contributing to the city's vibrant
  character; and
         WHEREAS, The natural beauty of Nacogdoches County is on
  display in the Angelina National Forest, a prime attraction for
  hikers, campers, and hunters; the Sam Rayburn Reservoir is another
  splendid leisure destination, offering ample opportunities for
  boating, swimming, camping, and picnicking; the Texas Blueberry
  Festival, held in June, celebrates the county's blueberry industry
  with live entertainment, a pancake breakfast, and a classic car
  show; the county's many attractions draw visitors from outside the
  area, and they also lure new residents, including individuals
  entering their retirement years; the county is one of the first in
  the state to have received the designation of Certified Retirement
  Community from the Texas Department of Agriculture; and
         WHEREAS, Singular and scenic, Nacogdoches County has played
  an essential part in the history of Texas, and it is fitting to take
  this opportunity to honor the county's residents for their past
  accomplishments and their continuing contributions to the Lone Star
  State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize February 21 and 22, 2007, as
  Nacogdoches County Days at the Texas State Capitol and extend to the
  delegation sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and informative
  visit to Austin.
