R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Canton Lions Club is celebrating its 75th |
|
|
anniversary on March 2, 2007, a notable milestone in the history of |
|
|
this noteworthy organization; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Lions Club of Van, the Canton Lions |
|
|
Club was organized on February 26, 1932, and received its charter on |
|
|
March 2; twenty charter members began meeting each Friday evening |
|
|
at the Dixie Hotel, and they soon installed A. O. Loughmiller as |
|
|
president, W. R. Swanzy as 1st vice president, and W. E. West as |
|
|
secretary/treasurer; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Other charter members of the club included C. W. |
|
|
Ashworth, H. F. Blackwell, Jr., Shade Conner, A. A. Dawson, J. H. |
|
|
Gilmer, Cliff Hail, B. D. High, Dr. H. H. Hilliard, Dr. T. R. |
|
|
Keahey, H. F. McPhail, G. T. Nolen, C. F. Riley, D. T. Riley, L. L. |
|
|
Sartin, P. H. Stanford, G. W. Tull, and George L. Yates; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After changing its weekly meeting locale to Wards |
|
|
Cafe in the 1980s, the club eventually settled at the Van Zandt |
|
|
Country Club, where members continue to meet each Wednesday at |
|
|
noon; although the meeting locations have changed throughout the |
|
|
years, the club's commitment to serving its community remains |
|
|
unchanged; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Throughout its long history, the Canton Lions Club |
|
|
has endeavored to play an important role in uplifting the lives of |
|
|
area residents by raising funds for and creating awareness of local |
|
|
and worldwide initiatives, most notably Lions Clubs |
|
|
International's extraordinary service to the blind and visually |
|
|
impaired, and under the leadership of current president Andy Reese, |
|
|
the Canton Lions Club will undoubtedly continue the group's |
|
|
impressive record of achievement; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the Canton Lions Club on its 75th |
|
|
anniversary and commend the Lions Club members for their |
|
|
outstanding civic contributions; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Canton Lions Club as an expression of high regard |
|
|
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
