R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dagan Ferrier, an innovative and dedicated teacher
  at Indian Creek Elementary School in the Southwest Independent
  School District in San Antonio, has been named a winner of the
  Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; and
         WHEREAS, This gifted teacher almost chose a more lucrative
  career in computer science but decided instead to devote himself to
  elementary education; since 1991, he has been teaching fifth grade
  classes at Indian Creek Elementary; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Ferrier holds his students to a high standard;
  using math and science workbooks he has developed with fellow
  teacher Jason Forde, he has greatly improved the performance of his
  students on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Ferrier's teaching techniques allow him to
  tailor instruction to each individual student's progress, with
  excellent results; every one of his students has passed the math,
  reading, and science sections of the TAKS test in recent years, with
  more than half of them answering 90 percent of the questions
  correctly; through the consulting firm he has founded with Mr.
  Forde, Forde-Ferrier Educational Services, Mr. Ferrier makes his
  workbooks and successful methods available to other teachers and
  schools; and
         WHEREAS, Dubbed the "Oscars of teaching" by Teacher magazine,
  the Milken National Educator Awards reward educators who have  
  demonstrated their excellence in the classroom, their long-range
  potential for professional leadership, and their ability to inspire
  students, colleagues, and other members of the community; one of
  four Texas teachers to win the award this year, Mr. Ferrier will
  receive a $25,000 cash prize at the annual Milken Family Foundation
  National Education Conference in Los Angeles in April; and
         WHEREAS, For 16 years, Mr. Ferrier has shown great
  compassion, commitment, and creativity in serving the children of
  Indian Creek Elementary School; by challenging and supporting his
  students, he has helped them find the path to academic success, and
  his record of achievement distinguishes him as a most worthy
  recipient for this prestigious commendation; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dagan Ferrier for winning a Milken
  Family Foundation National Educator Award and extend to him best
  wishes for continued success in his teaching career; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Ferrier as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
