R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Thousands of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and
  Sea Scouts from across the Lone Star State are marching up Congress
  Avenue to the State Capitol on February 3 for the 2007 Report to
  State; and
         WHEREAS, This year's event also marks the 100th anniversary
  of the World Scouting Movement, which continues to grow; the number
  of scouts in Texas has recently risen to more than 340,000, and in
  2006 alone, scouts volunteered a quarter million hours of service
  in the Lone Star State; and
         WHEREAS, Many well-known political and industry leaders from
  Texas were once scouts, including President George W. Bush,
  Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, Attorney General Greg Abbott,
  Walter Cronkite, Don Meredith, David Robinson, Nolan Ryan, Roger
  Staubach, George Strait, Herschel Walker, and 17 current members of
  Congress representing the Lone Star State; and
         WHEREAS, The highest scouting rank of Eagle Scout has been
  achieved by such prominent Texans as Governor Rick Perry, House
  Speaker Tom Craddick, Representative Mike O'Day, the late U.S.
  Senator Lloyd Bentsen, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and
  U.S. Congressmen Louie Gohmert, Jeb Hensarling, and Pete Sessions;
  and
         WHEREAS, Many members of the Texas House of Representatives
  are passionate about scouting, actively involved with local troops,
  or have children who are scouts; and
         WHEREAS, Scouting helps build character and self-confidence
  and instill lifetime values, increases the likelihood that
  participants will take active roles in clubs and school
  organizations, and contributes to the betterment of America's
  communities through its many service projects and programs; and
         WHEREAS, For a century, the scouting movement has inspired
  and uplifted generations of young people, equipping them with
  essential life skills and training them in citizenship, service,
  and leadership, and they have in turn given back to their
  communities across the state and nation; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 2007 Report to State and extend
  to all visiting scouts best wishes for a memorable event; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the 19 council delegations as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
