R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends of Audrey Perez Cantu were deeply |
|
saddened by her death on November 14, 2006, at the age of 87; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on December 10, 1918, in Pearsall, the former |
|
Audrey Perez grew up in San Antonio, the daughter of restaurant |
|
owners; she married Benny J. Cantu on December 10, 1933, and became |
|
a devoted housewife and mother while her husband operated his own |
|
drugstore; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cantu began to cook professionally in the 1940s |
|
when her husband opened a lunch counter at the drugstore; concerned |
|
about being away from her children, she had the idea to move the |
|
restaurant into a two-story house, in which the second floor would |
|
serve as the family living quarters; established in 1949, Audry's |
|
Mexican Restaurant went on to become a local institution, and |
|
through the decades, Mrs. Cantu oversaw the kitchen, devised the |
|
menus, and cooked; even after her son, Tony, took over the operation |
|
in 1980, she remained a steadfast presence, eventually leaving the |
|
kitchen for the front desk; and |
|
WHEREAS, She was a longtime member and president emeritus of |
|
the Sembradores de Amistad de San Antonio, which her husband |
|
founded, and she was active in the Pan American League and the |
|
Daughters of the Catholic Charity; in addition, she took great |
|
delight in playing games around the table with her friends; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cantu shared more than 46 years of marriage |
|
with her husband before his passing in 1980, and the couple were the |
|
parents of five children; and |
|
WHEREAS, The cherished matriarch of a large family and a |
|
valued member of the community, Audrey Cantu will long be |
|
remembered with affection by all who shared in the blessings of her |
|
life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor the memory of Audrey Perez Cantu and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her |
|
children, Ben Cantu, Jr., and his wife, Beverly, Audrey Williams |
|
and Gerald Koch, Aida Alonso and her husband, Anthony, and Tony |
|
Cantu and his wife, Susan; to her sisters, Judy McCoy and Annie |
|
Zamarripa and her husband, Pete; to her 12 grandchildren and 16 |
|
great-grandchildren; and to her other relatives and many friends; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Audrey |
|
Perez Cantu. |
