R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which is
  taking place on February 7, 2007, is an annual event intended to
  raise public consciousness about this potentially deadly disease;
  and
         WHEREAS, Now in its seventh year, National Black HIV/AIDS
  Awareness Day encourages African Americans to become better
  educated about the issue, to undergo testing so that they know their
  status, to seek medical treatment when necessary, and to get
  involved in their community's efforts to combat HIV/AIDS; and
         WHEREAS, This campaign is part of a much-needed effort to
  slow the spread of the disease among the nation's black population;
  almost one-half of the people in the United States who have been
  diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are African American, and the disease ranks
  as the leading cause of death among black women between the ages of
  25 and 34; and
         WHEREAS, Recognizing the urgency of the situation, leaders
  across the country are advocating decisive action to meet this
  health crisis, and National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is an
  important part of that effort; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize February 7, 2007, as National Black
  HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and encourage all Texans to join the fight
  against this devastating disease.
