R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may help
  console the family and friends of Thomas Cullin DeChant of San
  Antonio, who passed away on June 12, 2006; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. DeChant was born on July 13, 1927, in Cleveland,
  Ohio, where he served for a time as a police officer; in 1943, he
  began a tenure with the U.S. Postal Service that spanned nearly five
  decades; and
         WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. DeChant was a tireless
  civic volunteer, serving with the San Antonio Crime Commission,
  Traditional Crime Prevention Council, Bexar County Metropolitan
  Planning Organization, and the Air Quality Control Commission; he
  also demonstrated a genuine concern for the welfare of senior
  citizens, which he expressed through his involvement with the
  Comprehensive Nutrition Project of Senior Citizens, District 10
  Senior Citizens Commission, and the Joint City/County Commission on
  Elderly Affairs; moreover, his efforts helped to make possible the
  passage of a law that made preying on the elderly a felony; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. DeChant further served his fellow residents by
  co-founding the Alamo Area Brown Backers and the Oak Grove
  Neighborhood Association, and his many contributions earned him
  recognition from San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza; and
         WHEREAS, To all his endeavors Tom DeChant brought an
  unwavering integrity, a boundless capacity for hard work, and a
  profound desire to make a positive difference in the lives of
  others; although many will miss this dedicated Texan, he leaves
  behind a legacy of compassion and service that will be forever
  treasured by his loved ones; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Thomas Cullin DeChant
  and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his
  children, Denise Ann Murray and her husband, Michael, Diane Mary
  DeChant, Thomas J. DeChant, Debra Marie Harbison and her husband,
  the Reverend W. Scott Harbison, and Dorrine Harriette DeChant; to
  his granddaughter, Cassandra DeChant Harbison; to his brother,
  Gerald DeChant; to his sister, Patricia Telepak; and to his other
  relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Thomas
  Cullin DeChant.
