R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Jeff Horny and Pablo Veliz of San Antonio have
  enjoyed tremendous success with their film, La Tragedia de Macario,
  which was screened at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in
  January 2006, drawing a sell-out audience; and
         WHEREAS, The producer of the film, Jeff Horny has worked in
  the entertainment industry for more than 20 years; he moved to Los
  Angeles in 1994 and immersed himself in all aspects of filmmaking,
  including producing, directing, crew work, and acting, and he has
  performed in leading roles in a number of film, television, and
  theater productions; he has since returned to Texas, where he
  intends to produce his next film; and
         WHEREAS, La Tragedia de Macario was written, directed, and
  edited by Pablo Veliz, a graduate of Jefferson High School and a
  student at The University of Texas at San Antonio; inspired in part
  by the tragic events in Victoria in 2003, the film explores the
  complexities of the immigrant's struggle in a powerful and moving
  narrative of one family's story; an immigrant himself who crossed
  the Mexico-U.S. border, Mr. Veliz was only 22 years old when he
  wrote and directed the movie; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to its Sundance showing, La Tragedia de
  Macario won the Producers Award for Best Feature Film at the Houston
  Pan American Film Festival and was an official selection at the 2006
  Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the 2006 SXSW Film
  Festival, the 2005 Guadalupe Film Festival, and the 2005
  WorldFest--Houston; moreover, the film, which was featured on
  KLRN-TV during Hispanic Heritage Month, was acquired by Arrival
  Pictures for domestic theatrical release, which ensures that
  moviegoers across the nation will have the opportunity to view this
  compelling motion picture; and
         WHEREAS, In their film, Pablo Veliz and Jeff Horny have
  courageously tackled the controversial and topical issue of
  immigration, and it is a testament to their talent and their
  determination to share this important story that they have achieved
  such remarkable success; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jeff Horny and Pablo Veliz on their
  production, La Tragedia de Macario, and extend to them sincere best
  wishes for continued success both with this film and with all their
  future projects; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Horny and Mr. Veliz as an expression of high regard
  by the Texas House of Representatives.
