R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Wendell Nedderman has been an active member of |
|
Kiwanis International for more than a half-century, and his |
|
committed service to his fellow Texans embodies the Kiwanis ideals |
|
of serving the local community and contributing time to support |
|
children and young adults; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Nedderman's involvement in Kiwanis dates back to |
|
1955, when he began attending the meetings of the College Station |
|
chapter; following his relocation to the Dallas-Fort Worth area in |
|
1959, he joined the Kiwanis Club of Arlington; an active |
|
participant in the club's meetings and service projects ever since, |
|
he has expressed his wholehearted support of the organization's |
|
programs, believing that they greatly influence young people's |
|
lives for the better; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Nedderman's interest in assisting Texas youth |
|
has also been reflected in his professional life; following his |
|
service as a naval officer in World War II, he began a distinguished |
|
academic career; hired as an instructor at Texas A&M University in |
|
January 1947, he began a 12-year association with the university, |
|
during which time he earned both his master's degree from A&M and |
|
his doctoral degree in civil engineering from Iowa State |
|
University; and |
|
WHEREAS, Moving to Arlington State College in 1959, Dr. |
|
Nedderman became the founding dean of the newly established School |
|
of Engineering; in 1969, he was named vice president for academic |
|
affairs, and three years later he was chosen as president of the |
|
university; he led the school, which had in the meantime become The |
|
University of Texas at Arlington, for 20 years, stepping down in |
|
1992 but continuing to teach in the School of Engineering until his |
|
retirement in 2005; a revered figure at the university, he has been |
|
given the title of president emeritus, and a street as well as the |
|
engineering building on the campus are named in his honor; |
|
moreover, his accomplishments have elicited prestigious honors, |
|
including the Mirabeau Lamar Award from the Association of Texas |
|
Colleges and Universities; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Nedderman has also devoted his talents to a |
|
variety of other groups and institutions in North Texas; a member of |
|
the board of directors at Arlington Memorial Hospital and a trustee |
|
for Texas Health Resources, he has assisted organizations such as |
|
the North Texas Commission, the Longhorn Council of Boy Scouts, the |
|
Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way; his community |
|
service, combined with his academic accomplishments and his many |
|
decades of activity with Kiwanis International, has defined Wendell |
|
Nedderman as a civic leader of the first order, and his dedication |
|
to assisting his fellow citizens has been an immense benefit to the |
|
State of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Wendell Nedderman for more than |
|
50 years of membership in Kiwanis International and honor him for |
|
his other significant and influential work in the Lone Star State; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Nedderman as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
