R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Honey Brown Hope Foundation and the Suburban |
|
Sugar Land Women presented a public forum entitled "Connecting with |
|
the Diversity of Our Community" on January 31, 2007, in Missouri |
|
City; and |
|
WHEREAS, A gathering of vital importance, this forum was held |
|
to promote understanding and mutual respect among the residents of |
|
Fort Bend County, an area that is blessed with a multicultural |
|
population that hails from a variety of religious, racial, ethnic, |
|
and national backgrounds; and |
|
WHEREAS, The event paid particular attention to relations |
|
between the local Islamic community and other area citizens in |
|
order to foster greater tolerance and to grant Muslim residents an |
|
increased sense of security; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Suburban Sugar Land Women and the Honey Brown |
|
Hope Foundation are spotlighting this issue at a crucial time; |
|
there has been an increased amount of hostility directed at Muslims |
|
throughout the United States, and a group of young people who attend |
|
Dulles High School in Sugar Land recently vandalized a local |
|
Islamic Center; and |
|
WHEREAS, This most unfortunate incident is a sobering |
|
reminder of the corrosive and unjust anger that can exist in our |
|
community, but it has also offered a degree of hope for improved |
|
relations; one of the young people involved in the act has expressed |
|
deep remorse for his actions; the Islamic Society of Greater |
|
Houston South Zone has, in turn, shown compassion for this young man |
|
and asked the court to be lenient in punishing him for his crime; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, By focusing on this occurrence and its hopeful |
|
outcome, this community forum helped to bridge harmful divisions |
|
and to create greater unity, acceptance, and harmony among all |
|
residents of Fort Bend County; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize the "Connecting with the Diversity of |
|
Our Community" forum as an important and constructive dialogue that |
|
will improve social relations in southeastern Texas and commend the |
|
Honey Brown Hope Foundation and the Suburban Sugar Land Women for |
|
organizing this timely event; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the organizers as an expression of high regard from the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
