R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Texas has always been proud of its unique culture,
  and its literature has long attracted local, regional, and national
  audiences and critics; among those who have contributed to this
  treasured heritage, the state's Mexican American voices indeed
  deserve special acclaim, and on February 10, 2007, we are
  celebrating the launch of Hecho en Tejas:  An Anthology of Texas
  Mexican Literature; and
         WHEREAS, The Southwestern Writers Collection commissioned
  writer Dagoberto Gilb to edit this anthology, the first of its kind,
  and is commemorating its publication with an exhibition and a full
  day of readings, discussions, performances, and book signings on
  the San Marcos campus of Texas State University; and
         WHEREAS, More celebrations honoring the Texas Mexican
  community will be held in the next months in the cities of Houston,
  San Antonio, El Paso, San Benito, Dallas, Austin, Rockdale,
  Victoria, and Laredo; and
         WHEREAS, Edited by the writer Dagoberto Gilb, Hecho en Tejas 
  contains nearly a hundred selections, ranging from the 16th-century
  exploration narrative of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca to selections
  from younger voices on the Texas scene; and
         WHEREAS, Among the prose writers represented are Jovita
  Gonzalez, Americo Paredes, Rolando Hinojosa, Gloria Anzaldua,
  Tomas Rivera, and Sandra Cisneros; also included are works by such
  poets as Tino Villanueva, Carmen Tafolla, Raul Salinas, Angela de
  Hoyos, and Ricardo Sanchez, as well as corridos from the turn of the
  20th century and verses from the repertoires of Lydia Mendoza,
  Freddy Fender, Selena, and other music legends; rounding out the
  contents are 20 full-color images reproducing the work of leading
  Texas Mexican artists; and
         WHEREAS, With this expansive anthology and richly textured
  portrait of the Mexican American community in Texas, Mr. Gilb and
  the SWWC have made a major cultural contribution, and their
  achievement reflects great honor on our Lone Star State; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize February 10, 2007, as Hecho en Tejas
  Day at the State Capitol and extend to the Southwestern Writers
  Collection at Texas State University--San Marcos sincere
  appreciation for this literary treasure; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
  for the Southwestern Writers Collection as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
