R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Nazareth Academy, a private Catholic primary and
  middle school in Victoria, is celebrating its 140th anniversary in
  2007; and
         WHEREAS, Founded by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and
  Blessed Sacrament, a French Catholic order of nuns, the school was
  opened on January 7, 1867, with 55 girls as students; and
         WHEREAS, Originally known as the Convent School, it was
  renamed the Academy of Nazareth in 1880; the school was one of six
  institutions in Texas recognized for the superior education of
  women in 1883 by the United States Department of the Interior Bureau
  of Education; and
         WHEREAS, By 1917 the school was teaching classes at all
  levels, from elementary grades to high school; renamed Nazareth
  Academy in 1921, it soon received state accreditation, and a new
  facility was constructed in the 1940s; and
         WHEREAS, Boys were first admitted up to grade four in 1960,
  and Nazareth became a fully coeducational elementary and junior
  high school in 1976; day care and a preschool program were added in
  1977; and
         WHEREAS, Moving into the 21st century under the leadership of
  Principal C. R. Alicardi, the school continues to provide a strong
  academic foundation for its students' success in a changing world;
  thanks to its computer lab with wireless Internet access, the
  academy was a winner of a 2005-2006 Best Buy Te@ch Award, which is
  awarded to schools that integrate interactive technology with
  curriculum; the school's new sports complex has helped the school's
  volleyball team become the undefeated district champions for 2006;
  and
         WHEREAS, Nazareth Academy has a long and proud tradition of
  providing a quality education to generations of Victoria residents,
  and it will undoubtedly continue to play a vital role in the
  community for years to come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Nazareth Academy of Victoria on its
  140 years of service to area Texans and extend to all those
  associated with the school sincere best wishes for continued
  success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be provided to the
  school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
  Representatives.
