R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Sacred Heart Catholic School in Hallettsville is
  marking its 125th anniversary in 2007, and the school's students,
  teachers, and administrators, and the students' parents are
  celebrating this important milestone in the institution's history;
  and
         WHEREAS, This venerable school dates back to 1882, when three
  nuns from the congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and
  Blessed Sacrament came to Hallettsville and opened Incarnate Word
  Convent, a novitiate and boarding school for girls associated with
  Sacred Heart Church; the first classes convened on January 6, 1882,
  and from its earliest days, the convent offered courses in music,
  Latin, Spanish, French, and German at the primary, intermediate,
  and secondary levels; and
         WHEREAS, Known by various names throughout its history,
  including Sacred Heart Academy and Blessed Sacrament and Incarnate
  Word Convent, Sacred Heart Catholic School has grown tremendously
  with the passing years; originally housed in a single convent
  building, its facilities today include a band hall, a vocational
  shop facility, a gymnasium and weight room, a library and media
  center with Internet access, and a computer reading lab; and
         WHEREAS, The school's educational mandate has also expanded
  over the decades; male students began attending in 1892, and
  kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes were later added; Sacred
  Heart is known for its quality educational and extracurricular
  offerings, and the school has a long history of winning state
  championships in sports and academics as a member of the Texas
  Association of Private and Parochial Schools; and
         WHEREAS, Today, Sacred Heart is capably led by Principal
  David Smolik and Father John Peters, who, along with a dedicated
  staff of 48 teachers and aides, work to provide academic
  opportunities, leadership training, religious education, and
  extracurricular activities to more than 275 students in grades
  pre-K through 12; and
         WHEREAS, The celebration of this momentous anniversary
  provides an opportunity to reflect on the many generations of
  Texans who have passed through the doors of the Hallettsville
  institution and to applaud the school's sustained efforts to carry
  out its important educational mission; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the
  founding of Sacred Heart Catholic School and extend sincere best
  wishes to its administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni
  for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
