R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, During his years in the Christian ministry, the
  Reverend Joe Nathan Ferrell, Jr., of Alice has faithfully served
  the spiritual concerns of his community, and his compassionate
  regard for the welfare of others has touched many lives; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of H. B. Pemberton High School in
  Marshall, Reverend Ferrell studied at Southwest Theological
  Seminary in Fort Worth and was ordained to preach in 1950; since
  that time, he has led churches in California, Arizona, Washington,
  and his home state of Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Reverend Ferrell currently serves as the associate
  minister of Brooks African Methodist Episcopal Worship Center in
  Corpus Christi and First Christian Church in Alice; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to meeting the needs of his
  parishioners, Reverend Ferrell is active in a number of religious
  and civic organizations; the cofounder of the Community Coalition
  2000, Inc., he has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission,
  Advisory Council of Law Enforcement, Crime Stoppers, and on the
  board of the South Texas Museum; and
         WHEREAS, Reverend Ferrell has given further by organizing the
  first Black History Celebration at the Bethel African Methodist
  Episcopal Church in Alice, assisting in the establishment of a
  historical site at George Washington Carver Elementary School, and
  lending a helping hand to the victims of Hurricane Katrina; and
         WHEREAS, His efforts have been recognized by the Black
  History Committee, elected officials, and the City of Alice, which
  renamed a street in his honor; and
         WHEREAS, Reverend Ferrell is a dedicated advocate for young
  and old alike; he works to make a better world for all, and his
  contributions to his congregants and fellow citizens cannot be
  overstated; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the Reverend Joe Nathan Ferrell, Jr.,
  for his important church and community service and extend to him
  best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Reverend Ferrell as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
