R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The 64th Annual Regional Golden Gloves Boxing |
|
|
Tournament is taking place February 15 through 17, 2007, in |
|
|
Robstown; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This venerable event provides a prominent showcase |
|
|
for more than 100 amateur boxers; competitors, who range in age from |
|
|
11 through 34, hail from a variety of South Texas towns, including |
|
|
Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Victoria, Laredo, and other |
|
|
communities in the greater Coastal Bend area; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Squaring off in front of a large and enthusiastic |
|
|
audience, these male and female athletes exhibit their pugilistic |
|
|
skills as they vie to be the best fighter in their respective |
|
|
divisions and weight classes; the winning boxers in the open |
|
|
division also get the opportunity to advance to the Golden Gloves |
|
|
state tournament; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Corpus Christi Bay is sponsoring |
|
|
the Regional Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament for the 11th |
|
|
consecutive year; this respected civic group has served the |
|
|
community since 1973 and organizes a number of worthy projects, |
|
|
including the Roy Miller High School Key Club, which encourages |
|
|
youth leadership, and the "Terrific Kids" Program, which rewards |
|
|
academic achievement and school citizenship at the elementary |
|
|
level; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since the first Golden Gloves tournaments were |
|
|
staged in the 1930s, these spirited amateur matches have served as a |
|
|
means of building character, discipline, and skill among the |
|
|
contestants while bringing citizens together to enjoy a lively |
|
|
communal event; the Regional Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament in |
|
|
Robstown embodies that proud tradition, and it is a pleasure to |
|
|
recognize the event and its sponsor, the Kiwanis Club of Corpus |
|
|
Christi Bay; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 64th Annual Regional Golden |
|
|
Gloves Boxing Tournament in Robstown and extend best wishes to the |
|
|
event's organizers and participants for a successful tournament; |
|
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Kiwanis Club of Corpus Christi Bay as an expression |
|
|
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
