R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories |
|
of Roy Barbosa of Houston, who passed away on October 6, 2006; and |
|
WHEREAS, At the age of 17, Mr. Barbosa joined the Merchant |
|
Marines and then served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army; following |
|
his service in the military, he established his own accounting |
|
practice and later, with his son John, he founded Challenge Office |
|
Products; reflecting its founder's desire to give back to the |
|
community, this business donates to such worthwhile causes as the |
|
Houston Community College Scholarship fund-raisers and AVANCE, |
|
Inc., which serves predominantly poor Latino families in |
|
underserved communities; and |
|
WHEREAS, A charter member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of |
|
Greater Houston, Mr. Barbosa served as the organization's first |
|
Hispanic president; in addition, he was an active member of St. |
|
Phillip Neri Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Rusk |
|
Athletic Club, where he helped to raise funds to provide college |
|
scholarships for Hispanic students; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although his death has brought great sorrow to those |
|
who loved him, he leaves behind a legacy of good works that will |
|
long be remembered; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Roy Barbosa and extend |
|
sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his beloved wife |
|
of 55 years, Olivia; to his children and their spouses, Della and |
|
Luciano Villarreal, John and Debbie Barbosa, Anna and Allen |
|
Richards, and Michael Barbosa; to his grandchildren, Alberto, |
|
Carissa, Nicole, Javier, Steven, Jason, and Justin; and to his |
|
other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy |
|
Barbosa. |
