R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The people of Temple have lost an esteemed
  businessman and civic leader with the passing of Dan Lewis
  Steakley, who died January 17, 2007, at the age of 94; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Waco on October 12, 1912, Mr. Steakley
  received his bachelor's degree from Simmons University and a
  master's degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1936; he
  taught and coached tennis and debate in McAllen and Corpus Christi
  before volunteering for naval duty in 1942; and
         WHEREAS, For the next three years, Dan Steakley served as a
  communications officer on Admiral Chester Nimitz's staff;
  discharged as a lieutenant in 1945, he returned to Texas and joined
  the faculty at the University of Houston; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Steakley embarked on a successful business
  career in 1947 when he opened a Chevrolet dealership in Knox City; a
  decade later, he bought a Chevrolet dealership in Temple, a
  business that he successfully operated for 23 years before selling
  it in 1979; and
         WHEREAS, A widely respected community leader, Mr. Steakley
  served on the board of trustees of the University of Mary
  Hardin-Baylor for three terms; he was also a deacon at First Baptist
  Church and a valued member of the Temple Lions Club and the
  philanthropic organization Karem Shrine; and
         WHEREAS, Through his longtime involvement in the business and
  civic arenas, Dan Steakley helped to foster a stronger, more caring
  community, and he will be remembered with warm affection by those
  whose hearts and lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dan Lewis Steakley and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of
  72 years, Claydene Steakley; to his daughter, Sue Steakley; to his
  granddaughter, SueAnn Altman; to his great-grandchildren; and to
  his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dan Lewis
  Steakley.
