R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Descendents of John William Spencer are gathering in
  the Presidio Valley to celebrate their family reunion on October
  27-29, 2007, and this happy occasion provides a fitting opportunity
  to recognize the many accomplishments of this esteemed Texan; and
         WHEREAS, John William Spencer arrived in the Lone Star State
  in the spring of 1848, becoming one of the first settlers in the
  Presidio Valley; and
         WHEREAS, In an effort to serve his fellow pioneers, Mr.
  Spencer opened a retail business that later became the Spencer
  Brothers General Store, a successful venture supplying early Texans
  with dry goods and essential provisions; he also served the people
  of El Paso County as a notary public; and
         WHEREAS, In the early 1880s, Mr. Spencer discovered rich
  silver ore in the Chinati Mountains and two years later was
  instrumental in the establishment of the Presidio Mining Company;
  the business operated for nearly two decades and significantly
  bolstered the local economy; and
         WHEREAS, An astute entrepreneur, Mr. Spencer was also a man
  of honesty and integrity and was generous to his neighbors and to
  others in need; he instilled these virtues in his children and
  grandchildren, and today his descendants continue to give back as
  military service members, health care professionals, civil
  servants, law enforcement officials, attorneys, and business
  owners; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, the contributions made by members
  of the Spencer family have been interwoven in the compelling story
  of the Lone Star State, and it is indeed fitting that they be
  acknowledged at this time; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the organizers and participants
  of the 2007 Spencer family reunion and extend to all those involved
  sincere best wishes for a happy and memorable event; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the Spencer family as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
