R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, For more than a decade, Lewis Marshall of San |
|
Antonio has served as a member of the Texas Silver-Haired |
|
Legislature, and his efforts in behalf of senior citizens are truly |
|
deserving of praise; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Austin, Mr. Marshall graduated |
|
from L. C. Anderson High School, where he was a quarterback on the |
|
football team and an all-state mile runner on the track team; he |
|
continued his athletic endeavors at West Contra Costa College in |
|
Richmond, California, and subsequently earned both his bachelor's |
|
and master's degrees at Prairie View A&M University, where he was |
|
captain of the golf team; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Marshall retired in 1995 from a career in public |
|
education that spanned nearly four decades and included tenures at |
|
high schools in Nacogdoches and Kilgore, as well as middle and high |
|
schools in San Antonio; a talented football, track, and basketball |
|
coach, he was later inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic |
|
League Coaches Association Hall of Honor and Hall of Fame; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following his retirement, he was elected to the |
|
Texas Silver-Haired Legislature, and he is the only African |
|
American male serving in the body; he has been vice chair of the |
|
human service and criminal justice committees, and in 1998, he |
|
became the first African American from Bexar County elected to the |
|
National Silver Haired Congress, for which he is vice chair of the |
|
human service committee; moreover, he will serve as president at |
|
the Washington meeting of the 2007 National Council of Silver |
|
Haired Legislators; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan is a longtime member of numerous |
|
organizations, including the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Texas |
|
State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, |
|
AARP, and the NAACP; in addition, he contributes to his community as |
|
a member of the Senior Citizen Council of Bexar County and the Bexar |
|
Area Agency on Aging Committee, and as the District 2 |
|
representative on the City County Joint Commission on Elderly |
|
Affairs; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoys the love and support |
|
of his wife of 50 years, the former Juretta Williams, and of his |
|
children, Larry and Mitzi, and daughter-in-law, Sherry, and he is |
|
the proud grandfather of three granddaughters, Amber, Alia, and |
|
Sydnie; a faithful member of Second Baptist Church, he serves as a |
|
deacon and sings in the male chorus; and |
|
WHEREAS, Lewis Marshall has worked tirelessly to improve the |
|
lives of senior citizens in Bexar County and the Lone Star State, |
|
and his commitment to this large and important constituency has |
|
earned him the respect and admiration of all who are privileged to |
|
know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend Lewis Marshall for his efforts in behalf |
|
of the state's senior citizens and extend to him sincere best wishes |
|
for continued happiness and success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Marshall as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
