R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the |
|
|
University of Houston System are gathering in Austin to celebrate |
|
|
University of Houston System Day at the State Capitol on February |
|
|
20, 2007, and to meet with the members of each chamber to express |
|
|
their support of higher education in Texas; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The University of Houston System includes the |
|
|
University of Houston, the University of Houston-Clear Lake, the |
|
|
University of Houston-Downtown, the University of |
|
|
Houston-Victoria, and its UH System teaching centers at Sugar Land |
|
|
and Cinco Ranch; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, With an enrollment of 57,000 students, the UH System |
|
|
serves many individuals from southeast Texas and the Coastal Bend |
|
|
region, an area that is home to a quarter of the population of Texas |
|
|
and that generates almost a third of the state's gross product; the |
|
|
economic impact of the UH System on the region is more than $3 |
|
|
billion each year; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Over 220,000 students have graduated from the four |
|
|
UH System campuses; a majority of them remain in Texas, where they |
|
|
contribute greatly to the economic, social, and cultural vitality |
|
|
of the Lone Star State; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Benefiting the organization's students, staff, |
|
|
faculty, and fellow administrators with their leadership and |
|
|
expertise are University of Houston System Chancellor and |
|
|
University of Houston President Jay Gogue, University of |
|
|
Houston-Clear Lake President William Staples, University of |
|
|
Houston-Downtown President Max Castillo, and University of |
|
|
Houston-Victoria President Tim Hudson; with each passing year, the |
|
|
UH System continues to build on its tradition of excellence and |
|
|
shape a brighter future for its students; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize February 20, 2007, as University of |
|
|
Houston System Day at the State Capitol and express best wishes to |
|
|
the UH System community for its continued success; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared |
|
|
for Chancellor Gogue and university presidents Staples, Castillo, |
|
|
and Hudson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
|
|
Representatives. |
