R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends were saddened by the passing of
  John Burton Smith of San Antonio on November 19, 2006, yet the
  memory of his rewarding life may offer a measure of comfort in their
  time of loss; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Alice on February 10, 1947, Mr. Smith
  attended Adams High School and graduated from Southwest Texas State
  University with a degree in biology; he later completed a master's
  degree from Our Lady of the Lake University of San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, Dedicated to serving the public and educating its
  youth, Mr. Smith enjoyed a career as a natural sciences teacher that
  spanned 3-1/2 decades; he worked for nine years with the San Antonio
  Independent School District and 26 years with the Lackland
  Independent School District, retiring in 2005 from Stacey Jr./Sr.
  High School at Lackland Air Force Base; he taught an estimated 5,000
  students, and he gave generously of himself as a mentor, offering
  guidance and instilling in his young charges his passion for
  learning and his abiding interest in science and nature; and
         WHEREAS, A devoted husband, a cherished father, and an adored
  grandfather, John Smith built a life that was rich in family and
  friends; he had a contagious sense of humor and a warm patience that
  is deeply missed, and he will always be remembered with great
  admiration and affection; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Burton Smith and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of
  38 years, Patricia Gail Smith; to his daughters, Debra Rice and her
  husband, Garrett, Patricia DeLeon and her husband, Fernando, and
  Suzanne Margo and her husband, Michael; to his grandson, Grant Alan
  Rice; to his aunt, Rose Burton; to his cousins, Jay Burton and Meri
  Alexander; to his mother-in-law, Maude Schmitt; to his
  sister-in-law, Judy Schmitt; to his niece, Shannon Schmitt; and to
  his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Burton
  Smith.
