R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Martha Mitchell retired from her position as
  district clerk of Val Verde County in December 2006, concluding a
  distinguished public service career that extended nearly three
  decades; and
         WHEREAS, It was in April 1977 that Martha Mitchell first went
  to work in the district clerk's office in Del Rio, beginning as
  chief deputy; four years later, she was hired as the court
  administrator for Judge James M. Simmonds in the county court at
  law; she remained in that position until January 1985, when she was
  appointed the Val Verde County district clerk, beginning her
  22-year tenure in that office; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell was elected to five consecutive terms
  as the district clerk, and her longevity is a testament to the
  excellent work she performed in maintaining the county's official
  records, recording and entering the acts, proceedings, and
  judgments of the court, and completing the many other
  administrative tasks of her office; and
         WHEREAS, Highly respected by her peers, she has been a
  prominent figure in the County and District Clerks' Association of
  Texas, serving on and chairing numerous committees and speaking at
  association meetings, seminars, and conferences; moreover, she has
  been a member of the board of directors for the Texas District Court
  Alliance, which provides continuing education to district clerks in
  Texas; this accomplished administrator has also lent her
  organizational skills to groups such as the American Red Cross in
  Del Rio, where she is an advisory board member, and the Del Rio Law
  Enforcement Officers' Association, where she was secretary; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell has received a number of awards for her
  official and civic service; she was named woman of the year by the
  Del Rio Business and Professional Women's Club and volunteer of the
  year by both the Val Verde County Child Welfare Board and the Region
  8 Child Protective Services division; she had the prestigious honor
  in 2006 of being named Texas District Clerk of the Year by the
  County and District Clerks' Association of Texas; these
  commendations speak to the sterling reputation that Martha Mitchell
  built in her long and noteworthy career, and she may reflect proudly
  on her many achievements as an elected official; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend the Honorable Martha Mitchell for her
  many years of exemplary service as the Val Verde County district
  clerk and extend to her best wishes for a satisfying retirement;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Mitchell as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
