R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
  meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends of
  Guadalupe Cruz of Dallas, who passed away on May 23, 2006; and
         WHEREAS, A native of the Lone Star State and a proud veteran
  of World War II, "G. A." Cruz dedicated nearly four decades to
  educating and coaching Texas youth; and
         WHEREAS, He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from
  East Texas State University and went on to teach high school biology
  and coach football, basketball, and track in Rio Grande City,
  Hebbronville, and El Paso; in the early 1960s, he led the Fabens
  High School cross-country team to a Class A state championship and
  the boys' track team to the regional finals; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Cruz became assistant principal of Woodrow
  Wilson High School in Dallas in 1976, and he earned the respect and
  admiration of students and colleagues alike before his retirement
  in the mid-1980s; as evidence of his commitment to the public
  education system in Texas, he came out of retirement and went back
  to teaching for a few years to help out during a period of teacher
  shortages; and
         WHEREAS, Also devoted to his family, Mr. Cruz operated a
  number of small businesses to supplement his income and ensure that
  his five daughters could receive a college education; and
         WHEREAS, G. A. Cruz was a positive influence in the lives of
  countless young people, and he leaves behind a legacy of good works
  that will long endure; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Guadalupe Cruz and
  extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
  Mary Lucy Cruz; to his daughters, Julie Ann Saldana, Dora Alice
  Cruz, Dr. Alma Lee Garza, Lucy Marie Ford, and Cynthia Marie Osuna;
  to his grandchildren; to his great-grandchild; to his sister,
  Yolanda Lerma; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Guadalupe
  Cruz.
