R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The family and friends of Robert Walker Best |
|
suffered an immeasurable loss with the death of this talented, |
|
caring, and beloved young man on August 26, 2006, at the age of 23; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Born August 22, 1983, Walker Best grew up in San |
|
Antonio and attended Winston Churchill High School, where he was a |
|
wide receiver for the Chargers football team and impressed his |
|
teammates and coaches with his hard work and spirited play; he was |
|
equally dedicated to his studies, and his exceptional grades earned |
|
him the title of valedictorian for the 2002 graduating class; he was |
|
also active in student government, and his accomplishments as |
|
athlete, scholar, and leader prompted his classmates to vote him |
|
the best all-around student at Churchill High; and |
|
WHEREAS, After receiving his diploma, Mr. Best enrolled at |
|
Texas A&M University in the fall of 2002, where he majored in |
|
biology and was an honors student; though focused on academics, he |
|
found time to participate in extracurricular affairs at the |
|
university, acting as chair for intramural league activities, being |
|
voted Sportsman of the Year for 2004-2005, and serving as a member |
|
of the Conference on Student Government Associations; his ultimate |
|
goal was to become a doctor, like his father before him, and he |
|
planned to attend medical school after his anticipated graduation |
|
in December 2006; and |
|
WHEREAS, Both Texas A&M and Churchill High School have |
|
honored the memory of Mr. Best; the Churchill football team wore his |
|
initials, W. B., on their helmets during the 2006 season, and on |
|
October 3, he was commemorated in the Aggie Silver Taps ceremony; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Walker Best was known for his generous and |
|
compassionate personality, which was expressed in his eagerness to |
|
help those in need; a member of University United Methodist Church |
|
in San Antonio, he sought to embrace the Christian concepts of love |
|
and forgiveness, and his success in fulfilling these ideals, |
|
combined with his engaging and upbeat personality, endeared him to |
|
many; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Walker Best and |
|
extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|
parents, Brenda Best and Dr. George Stephen Best; to his brothers, |
|
Scott Price Best and his wife, Kelli, Stephen Lane Best and his |
|
wife, Kristen, and Thomas Foster Best; to his nephews, Nathaniel |
|
and Andrew; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert |
|
Walker Best. |
