R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Elmira Cornett of Houston, a beloved community
  leader, celebrated her 86th birthday on February 13, 2007; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Louisiana in 1921, the former Elmira Harvey
  graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School and went on to attend
  the Benz School of Floral Design; in 1970, she opened the Cornett
  Flower and Gift Shop, which she operated for nearly two decades; and
         WHEREAS, Known by family and friends as "Mama L.," this
  esteemed woman has worked in behalf of youth in her community as an
  advisory board member of Hobart Taylor Park and the Houston Parks
  and Recreation Department and as a volunteer with Boy Scout Troop
  No. 896, Norton Church of God in Christ, and Buck Street Memorial
  Church of God in Christ; moreover, she has shared her time and
  talents as a youth drama teacher and has benefited numerous
  organizations with her fund-raising efforts; in 1985, she founded
  the Joy of Awakening Life Youth Planning Center, which continues to
  help those in need through distributions of clothing, food, and
  charitable donations; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Cornett has received numerous well-deserved
  honors through the years, including a certificate of recognition
  from the National Children's Cancer Society, an outstanding black
  Houstonian award from Magic 102, and a certificate of service from
  the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, to name but a few;
  and
         WHEREAS, The wife of the late Alton Cornett, Mrs. Cornett
  enjoys the love and support of her three children, as well as her
  grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Elmira "Mama L." Cornett has inspired countless
  people with her passionate dedication to the youth of her
  community, and her 86th birthday provides an opportune time to
  honor her for her exceptional efforts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Elmira Cornett on her 86th birthday
  and commend her for the myriad ways in which she has brightened the
  lives of her fellow Texans; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Cornett as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
