R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The retirement of Homer Gallegos of McAllen in March
  2007 brings to a close a notable 30-year career with the U.S.
  Department of Veterans Affairs, Readjustment Counseling Service;
  and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Gallegos earned his bachelor's degree and his
  master's degree in education from Pan American University; in 1975,
  while enrolled in graduate school, he went to work for the American
  GI Forum Veterans Outreach Program in McAllen; and
         WHEREAS, Five years later, Mr. Gallegos became one of the
  first VA employees to lead the nation's Vietnam Veterans Outreach
  Centers; he served in Laredo before transferring to the McAllen
  Veterans Center in 1983, where he has worked for the past 24 years;
  and
         WHEREAS, A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, this brave Texan
  served his country in Vietnam and later joined the U.S. Air Force
  Reserve, retiring as a major after more than three decades of
  military service; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Gallegos has been a valued member of the
  American Legion, the VFW, and the Vietnam Veterans of America,
  which he served as a chaplain; he has further shared his time with
  the Hidalgo County Economic Development Board of Directors, the
  American GI Forum national board of directors, and the Hidalgo
  Veterans Advisory Committee on Veterans Affairs; and
         WHEREAS, His efforts have earned him a number of accolades,
  including the Advocate of the Year Award, the VA 2000 Secretary's
  Hands and Heart Award, and the Disabled American Veterans
  Distinguished Service Award; and
         WHEREAS, Through his dedication to his occupation and to his
  fellow veterans, Homer Gallegos has earned the lasting respect and
  admiration of all who are privileged to know him, and he leaves
  behind an inspiring legacy of achievement for those who will follow
  in his footsteps; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Homer Gallegos on his retirement from the
  U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Readjustment Counseling
  Service, and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Gallegos as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
