R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Miss Texas Shilah Phillips was named first runner-up |
|
to Miss America on January 29, 2007; and |
|
WHEREAS, A 2000 graduate of the Denver School of the Arts, Ms. |
|
Phillips studied jazz music at Howard University before moving to |
|
Los Angeles to pursue a singing career; she subsequently moved to |
|
Texas to be near her mother and stepfather and competed in her first |
|
pageant for the title of Miss Frisco, which she won in 2005; less |
|
than a year later, she became the first African American to be |
|
crowned Miss Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to winning first runner-up, she was a |
|
preliminary talent winner for her vocal performance of, "I Believe |
|
in You and Me"; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Phillips is a jazz studies and voice student at |
|
the University of North Texas, and she maintains a busy speaking |
|
schedule, sharing her message, "Never Give Up" with people |
|
throughout the state; and |
|
WHEREAS, Shilah Phillips distinguished herself with dignity, |
|
grace, and charisma at the 2007 Miss America competition, and she is |
|
a source of great pride for citizens of the Lone Star State; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Shilah Phillips on being named |
|
first runner-up to Miss America and extend to her sincere best |
|
wishes for continued happiness and success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Phillips as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
