R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends mourn the loss of Roy Edward
  Barfield of Rogers, who passed away on January 22, 2007, at the age
  of 76; and
         WHEREAS, Born on October 6, 1930, in Temple to Albus Emmitt
  and Elsa Schmidt Barfield, Roy Barfield began his working life
  early by helping out in his parents' feed and grocery store; and
         WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Barfield worked as a cab
  driver for several companies; when the tragic explosion of the SS
  Grandcamp in Texas City in 1947 demolished many automobiles, he
  helped to transport new cars to the region; he then worked as a
  short-order cook at the Goody-Goody drive-in before apprenticing as
  a plumber at the Messer Plumbing Company, and while working there he
  received his journeyman plumbing license; and
         WHEREAS, After marrying his beloved wife Elizabeth in 1950,
  Mr. Barfield answered his nation's call to duty during the Korean
  War and served two years in the United States Army at Fort Bliss,
  Texas, and Fort Meade, Maryland; and
         WHEREAS, Returning to Temple, Mr. Barfield earned his master
  plumbing license and opened his own business, providing plumbing,
  heating, and air conditioning services to his community for 20
  years; and
         WHEREAS, He went on to work as a civil servant at Fort Hood
  for 20 years, finishing his career as the shop foreman in the
  maintenance division; with a reputation for handling the
  government's money and business as if they were his own, Mr.
  Barfield earned the highest civilian commendation possible short of
  presidential recognition; and
         WHEREAS, An expert in the building trades, Roy Barfield loved
  restoring houses to their original condition and reclaiming the
  land on the farm he and his wife retired to in Rogers; hardworking
  and resourceful, he will be fondly remembered as an honest
  businessman, a devoted family man who enjoyed cooking special meals
  for his loved ones, and a sensitive man who was not afraid to shed a
  tear when witnessing an act of kindness or patriotism; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Roy Edward Barfield
  and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
  wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Lawhon Barfield; to his sons, David
  Barfield and his wife, Sharon, and Sam Barfield and his wife,
  Sandra; to his grandchildren, John, Scott, and Laura Barfield; and
  to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Edward
  Barfield.
