R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Laredo Independent School District is paying |
|
|
tribute to the late Sabas Perez by dedicating a new wing in his |
|
|
honor at the LISD Magnet for Engineering and Technology Education |
|
|
at Dr. Leo Gonzalez Cigarroa High School; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Perez, who passed away on October 30, 2006, at |
|
|
the age of 78, was employed by Laredo ISD for more than 30 years as |
|
|
an educator and counselor; throughout his life he demonstrated an |
|
|
extraordinary commitment to the welfare of young people, both |
|
|
inside and outside of the classroom; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of Laredo ISD's Martin Raymond & Tirza |
|
|
High School, Mr. Perez attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville |
|
|
and graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce with |
|
|
bachelor's and master's degrees; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He drew on his personal experiences with racism and |
|
|
discrimination in order to relate to and advise students who sought |
|
|
his counsel; moreover, he was quick to volunteer his time and |
|
|
talents to support those students in times of crisis; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, During his long and fruitful life, Mr. Perez also |
|
|
positively benefited the lives of others through his work with the |
|
|
Texas Education Agency, the Texas Commission for the Blind, the |
|
|
Texas Rehabilitation Commission, and the migrant program at Laredo |
|
|
Community College; moreover, he served the community as executive |
|
|
director of the Laredo Methadone Program; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Perez enjoyed a rewarding marriage with Maria |
|
|
Angela Perez, and together they raised an accomplished family; |
|
|
Sabas Perez understood the importance of ensuring that educational |
|
|
opportunities be made available to everyone, and it is fitting that |
|
|
his legacy endure through the dedication of a new wing at the LISD |
|
|
Magnet for Engineering and Technology Education; now, therefore, be |
|
|
it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of a new wing at the |
|
|
LISD Magnet for Engineering and Technology Education at Dr. Leo |
|
|
Gonzalez Cigarroa High School in honor of Sabas Perez and pay |
|
|
tribute to the life of this exemplary educator. |
