R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Eighth-grader Anna DeSanctis of Holy Spirit
  Episcopal School in Houston has received a 2007 Prudential Spirit
  of Community Award, one of two such awards in the state of Texas;
  and
         WHEREAS, Now 13, Ms. DeSanctis was born in China and adopted
  as a baby; when she learned that most orphanages in China do not
  have libraries, she was saddened to think that the children in these
  institutions would not have access to the books essential to an
  understanding of the world; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. DeSanctis decided to raise $2,000 for a library
  for one orphanage, asking for cash donations instead of birthday
  presents, hosting a school dance to raise funds, and contributing
  her own allowance for a year; she also asked her grandparents to ask
  their friends to contribute; and
         WHEREAS, Within a year and a half, Ms. DeSanctis had raised
  over $22,000; working with two social welfare organizations in
  China, she was able to start libraries in four orphanages and to
  fund water wells in two villages; and
         WHEREAS, The Spirit of Community Awards sponsored by
  Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary
  School Principals honor young people in middle school and high
  school for outstanding volunteer service; students are chosen at
  the local, state, and national levels, and more than 70,000 young
  volunteers have been honored in the 11 years of the program; and
         WHEREAS, This outstanding young woman has demonstrated great
  compassion, initiative, and determination in pursuit of a noble and
  selfless goal; she is an inspiration to all and is justly deserving
  of special commendation; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Anna DeSanctis on winning a 2007
  Prudential Spirit of Community Award and extend to her best wishes
  for a bright and successful future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. DeSanctis as an expression of high regard from the
  Texas House of Representatives.
