H.R. No. 720

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The New Caney High School academic decathlon team completed another outstanding year of competition in 2007, winning its 11th consecutive regional championship and taking fourth place at the 2007 state finals; and

WHEREAS, At the regional event, Class 4A New Caney dominated not only the teams in its own class but also those at the Class 5A level, a significant achievement for this talented group of students; and

WHEREAS, The 2007 team, which was coached by Ms. Stephenson, Ms. Smith, Ms. Bush, and Mr. Moore, includes Kevin Bush, Jose Garcia, Rafee Talukder, Derrick Pitts, Scott Sadler, Elizabeth Joyce, Anthony Carmona, Joseph Strother, and Michael Birdsey; and

WHEREAS, Each of the nine team members completed seven tests, two speaking events, and an essay, with scores tallied and compared to those of their peers; topics for this year's event were Chinese culture, music, literature, art, and economics; and

WHEREAS, By demonstrating a commitment to academic achievement, the 2007 New Caney High School academic decathlon team has continued a decade-long tradition of excellence, and team members can look back with pride on their impressive accomplishments; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the members and coaches of the New Caney High School academic decathlon team for winning their 11th consecutive regional championship and on their fourth-place finish at the state competition; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the New Caney High School academic decathlon team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
