R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Since the founding of osteopathic medicine in 1874,
  physicians trained in this discipline have been committed to the
  goal of providing skilled, holistic health care to their patients;
  and
         WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) believe that home,
  family, work, spiritual, and social environments have a significant
  impact on an individual's health and well-being; and
         WHEREAS, At present, there are 3,350 licensed D.O.s
  practicing in the Lone Star State, and the ranks of medical
  professionals in Texas include growing numbers of female and
  Hispanic, Asian, and African American osteopathic physicians; and
         WHEREAS, Texas osteopathic physicians offer primary care
  through family, general, internal medicine, OB/GYN, and pediatric
  practices, in addition to providing preventive medical services,
  public health services, and an entire spectrum of specialty care;
  and
         WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians practice in many rural and
  medically underserved areas of the state; in some instances, a D.O.
  is the only physician in the county; and
         WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians also serve this state and
  country as members of the United States armed forces; in that
  capacity, a number have rendered distinguished service in Iraq; and
         WHEREAS, The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the
  cornerstone of the University of North Texas Health Science Center,
  continues to train physicians who enter primary care specialties in
  numbers well above the national average for medical school
  programs; and
         WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians are providing medical care
  to Texas legislators and their staffs while serving as Doctor of the
  Day at the State Capitol during the week of March 26 to March 30,
  2007; and
         WHEREAS, Practitioners of osteopathic medicine play a vital
  role in meeting the health care needs of countless Texans, and their
  myriad contributions to this state are indeed deserving of highest
  commendation; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize March 30, 2007, as Osteopathic
  Medicine Day at the State Capitol and extend to all the state's
  osteopathic physicians and medical students sincere appreciation
  for their commitment to providing quality, comprehensive, and
  personalized care.
