R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, From February 19 to March 26, 1945, United States |
|
|
troops struggled against Japanese forces to gain control of the |
|
|
island of Iwo Jima; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Our nation's victory in that battle came at the |
|
|
expense of 6,281 American lives, with more than 19,000 American |
|
|
troops wounded; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The year 2007 marks the 62nd anniversary of the |
|
|
raising of our Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima, and on May 26, the |
|
|
Center for Military History and the Gathering of Eagles are |
|
|
commemorating this historic event with the Flag of Our Fathers |
|
|
symposium in Houston; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The freedoms we enjoy today are the result of the |
|
|
sacrifices and contributions of our military veterans, and time can |
|
|
never diminish what we owe these valorous patriots for their |
|
|
steadfast service in this country's behalf; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize May 26, 2007, as Flag of Our Fathers |
|
|
Day and commend America's veterans for their outstanding service, |
|
|
courage, and heroism. |
