R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends of Texas educator Mart N. Hitt,
  Jr., mourn his passing on February 9, 2007, at the age of 95; and
         WHEREAS, Born to a farming family in Buckholts, Mr. Hitt was a
  poor student himself until a teacher inspired him to work his way
  from the bottom of his class to the top; as a result of his hard work
  he graduated as valedictorian of Moran High School in 1931; and
         WHEREAS, Awarded a full scholarship to East Texas State
  University, Mr. Hitt was forced by economic circumstances to
  postpone his college education in order to work as a day laborer; by
  the time he enrolled in college, his scholarship had expired, and he
  put himself through school by milking cows, selling newspaper ads,
  and doing other odd jobs, earning a bachelor's degree in 1936 and a
  master's degree in 1942; and
         WHEREAS, In 1935, Mr. Hitt met and married Margy McGee, and
  their union lasted 70 years; he began his educational career the
  following year at Brownsboro High School, where he pioneered the
  track and football programs; he then worked as principal and coach
  at Frisco High School, where he became superintendent in 1940; and
         WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty during World War
  II, Mr. Hitt joined the navy and served as a communications officer
  on Midway Island; after the war he continued to serve in the Navy
  Reserve until 1950; and
         WHEREAS, Taking up his teaching career again, he taught at
  the Buckner Orphans Home; from 1947 to 1964 he served as the
  superintendent of the Wilmer-Hutchins school district, when he
  became the superintendent of the Pine Tree district in Longview,
  retiring in 1977; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Hitt served his community in other ways as well,
  as president of the North Texas School Master's Club in Dallas and
  the East Texas School Master's Club in Marshall; he was an honorary
  life member of the Texas Association of School Administrators, the
  American School Administrators, and the National Congress of
  Parents and Teachers; and
         WHEREAS, Loved and respected by his faculty, Mr. Hitt was
  esteemed for his dedication and his excellent judgment; he
  maintained high academic standards in all the schools he
  supervised, and his influence will continue to have a positive
  effect on the lives of his students for years to come; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the life of Mart N. Hitt, Jr., and offer
  sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his sons,
  Raymond W. Hitt and G. Preston Hitt; to his sister, Geneva Quigley;
  and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mart N.
  Hitt, Jr.
