R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Wednesday Review Club of Killeen celebrated the
  100th anniversary of its founding in 2006; and
         WHEREAS, In 1906, 12 Central Texas women joined together to
  form the Ladies Literary Society of Killeen; adopting the motto
  "Wisdom is Godly," members strove for mutual intellectual, civic,
  and social improvement; they met every other Wednesday, and soon
  settled on a new name; and
         WHEREAS, The Wednesday Review Club has been a tremendous
  asset to its community through the years; in support of local
  schools, the group has donated a piano and books as well as land for
  a baseball field, playground equipment, and football uniforms; the
  organization is also credited with creating the first Parent
  Teacher Association in Killeen and with lobbying lawmakers to
  provide textbooks free of charge to Texas schoolchildren; and
         WHEREAS, The first Killeen Public Library was formed from the
  group's clubhouse, which opened in 1933 and also served the
  community as a Red Cross Center; and
         WHEREAS, Federated in 1921, the Wednesday Review Club
  continues to support the General Federation of Women's Clubs on
  both the national and state levels; currently, members are working
  to collect books for Killeen and Harker Heights libraries, raising
  scholarship money, and contributing to Santa Pals, Food Care Center
  in Killeen, Families in Crisis, Inc., Home and Hope Shelter, and The
  University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; and
         WHEREAS, For a century, the members of the Wednesday Review
  Club have been a dynamic and positive force in their city, enriching
  the minds and lives of countless Killeen residents, and it is a
  pleasure to honor their efforts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the Wednesday Review Club of
  Killeen on the 100th anniversary of its founding and extend to its
  members best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
