R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Swimming prodigy Mary Beck of Westlake High School
  set a new national high school record in the 200-yard individual
  medley at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships, held at
  The University of Texas at Austin Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming
  Center on February 16 and 17, 2007; and
         WHEREAS, The 15-year-old sophomore, who had previously set
  the national record two weeks earlier only to see it bested,
  regained the top mark in the meet's preliminary round with a time of
  1 minute, 57.74 seconds; she then topped her own record in the
  finals when she touched the wall at 1:57.41, a full five seconds
  ahead of her closest competitor; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Beck, a Colorado transfer who won her first
  state title at the age of eight, also nabbed a silver medal in the
  500-yard freestyle and garnered two gold medals in team relay
  events; and
         WHEREAS, The individual medley is a true benchmark of
  swimming excellence and all-around ability, as this challenging
  event requires participants to demonstrate skill in all four
  strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle; in
  addition to being proficient in the four diverse strokes, swimmers
  must seamlessly transition from one style to the next without
  losing precious seconds; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Beck's performance not only brought the Olympic
  hopeful well-deserved recognition, it also helped her team take
  home the state crown, and she will always be able to look back with
  pride on this exciting championship experience; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Beck on setting a new national
  high school record in the 200-yard individual medley and extend to
  her best wishes for continued success in all her endeavors; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Beck as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
