R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Pete Taylor
  received the 2007 Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club
  of Killeen in recognition of his many years of exemplary community
  leadership; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Tennessee, Pete Taylor holds a
  bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University, as well
  as a master's degree from Kansas State University, and is a graduate
  of the U.S. Army War College and the U.S. Army Command and General
  Staff College; he began his distinguished military career in 1960
  and subsequently served two tours of duty in Vietnam; he steadily
  rose through the ranks to become Commander General of III Corps at
  Fort Hood, all the while shaping the lives of many military leaders
  with his sound advice and astute judgment; and
         WHEREAS, Since retiring in 1993, General Taylor has been
  called on for his military expertise by Governor George W. Bush, who
  appointed him to the Texas Strategic Military Planning Commission,
  which he chaired for several years, and by U.S. Representative
  Nancy Pelosi, who appointed him as commissioner to the Overseas
  Basing Commission; in addition, he was asked by Central Texas
  mayors to lead the Heart of Texas Defense Alliance, a group that
  advocates for the sustainability of Fort Hood and other defense
  industries in the area; and
         WHEREAS, General Taylor has long supported the Killeen
  community through his involvement in such noteworthy organizations
  as the United Way, the Rotary Club, the Greater Killeen Chamber of
  Commerce, the Boy Scouts of America, the Killeen Food Center, and
  the American Cancer Society; he served for more than five years on
  the Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees and, as a
  member of the Central Texas University Task Force, was instrumental
  in establishing the Killeen campus of Tarleton State University;
  moreover, he served as vice chair of the Heights State Bank board
  for nearly a decade; and
         WHEREAS, One of General Taylor's most significant
  accomplishments is cofounding the Military Child Education
  Coalition, a national organization that has helped countless
  military families address the challenges of frequent school
  transitions faced by their children, and he remains active with
  MCEC as a member of the board of directors; and
         WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous honors, including the
  Frank W. Mayborn Humanitarian Award, General Taylor enjoyed many
  happy years with his wife, the late Mary Jane Taylor, with whom he
  raised three children, Kay, Scott, and Curtis, and welcomed six
  grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, The generosity, dedication, and tireless efforts of
  Lieutenant General Pete Taylor have contributed vitally to the city
  of Killeen, the Lone Star State, and this nation, and he truly
  merits the respect and gratitude of his fellow citizens; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant
  General Pete Taylor on his receipt of the 2007 Book of Golden Deeds
  Award from the Exchange Club of Killeen and extend to him sincere
  best wishes for continued happiness and success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Lieutenant General Pete Taylor as an expression of
  high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
